Mozambique has the fifth largest population of the East African countries, but ranks only tenth highest in mobile penetration. The entrance of Movitel in 2012 caused a dramatic shakeup in the market, with the MNO rolling out significant infrastructure and become the number one operator (ahead of mCel and Vodacom) within just a few years. Unlike several other East African countries, 4G rollout is yet to commence, although the ongoing extensive rollout of fibre is readying the market for such a move. With new legislation mandating infrastructure sharing being proposed, the Mozambican tower industry may be set to change shape; Mott MacDonald take a deeper look at the country in their latest Share Square.

BMI View: IHS Towers and American Tower Corporation’s acquisition of Nigeria’s towers has enabled them to cement their positions as the leading players among Africa’s big four tower firms. If Helios Towers Africa and Eaton Towers cannot outbid their larger rivals for new assets in the remaining attractive markets, they may seek scale through a merger or become acquisition targets.

The first potential tower sale and leaseback in the Middle East was mooted over a year ago, with Zain appointing Citigroup to advise on a potential tower transaction in two Gulf countries in early 2015. Mobily, Etisalat’s operation in Saudi Arabia was next to follow suit, appointing TAP advisors to look into a potential sale of their towers. Fast forward 12 months and Saudi Telecom Company are now joining the party – potentially putting all operator owned towers in Saudi on the market at the same time. TowerXchange take a look at the portfolios potentially for sale, examine the latest developments in the processes and explore who the likely bidders will be.

Bolivia had an estimated population of 10.8mn people and 10.4mn mobile subscriptions at the end of 20151, giving a mobile penetration of 96% - the third lowest level of penetration in South America ahead of only Guyana (84%) and Ecuador (80%). Around 90% of subscribers have a pre-paid account, which ranks 2nd highest amongst the South American countries. Guyana ranks the highest with 96% pre-paid subscribers. There are three mobile network operators (MNOs) serving the Bolivian market (See figure 1). The largest operator, Entel, serves 4.9mn subscribers which equates to a market share of 46.9%. The second largest operator by subscriber numbers is Tigo (Millicom) which has 3.1mn subscribers (30.0%) and VIVA, the smallest of the three operators, serves the remaining 2.4mn (23.1%) subscribers.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is the largest country in the Middle East and 12th largest in the world by land area. The economy is largely oil based, with oil providing 45% of GDP and 90% of export earnings; KSA holds 16% of the world’s proven petroleum reserves. Recent reductions in the oil price are therefore limiting economic growth and hence potentially constraining growth for mobile operators. Efforts to diversify the economy in areas such as downstream petrochemicals and mining are in progress[1] and may help to offset this to some extent. The population of KSA has grown annually at an average of 2.4% over the past five years to the current estimate of 30.9m people of whom 57% are under 30 years old. KSA has the joint lowest population density in the Middle East region with 14 people per km2 compared to the regional average of 136 people per km2.

Kuwait had a population of 4.0mn in 2014, an increase from 3.7mn in 2013. The population has a young age profile with a median age of 28.9 years and in 2014 69% of residents were non-Kuwaiti nationals. Kuwait has an area of 17,820 km2 but the population is highly concentrated in Kuwait City and its suburbs, especially on the shore of the Arabian Gulf. Subscriber (SIM) penetration was 221% by the end 2014, growing at >7% a year because multiple SIMs are common as part of the highly competitive environment. Three Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) serve Kuwait with broadly equal shares of the total subscribers. As shown in Figure one, Zain was the largest of these in 2014 with 35% of the market. VIVA and Ooredoo, rebranded from Wataniya in 2014, had very similar shares at between 32% and 33%. About 74% of total subscriptions were pre-paid.

Where possible, the tower counts that follow have been verified through site lists and direct conversation with management between Q4 2014 and Q1 2015. In some cases, counts represent our best estimate. We cannot provide even an estimate for some towercos and infracos, which are listed at the foot of this table. If you would like to suggest an amendment to any of these figures, please email kosmotherly@towerxchange.com.
