How are towercos closing the digital gender gap?

What presence do women in the workforce have?

This year’s International Women’s Day theme was DigitALL – innovation and technology for gender equality and seeks to recognise and celebrate the women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education. Among others, the observance explored the impact of the digital gender gap.

As towercos play a big role in connecting underserved populations to the internet, TowerXchange spoke with women at towercos across the world to find out what the industry is doing. In our series of conversations called Women Who Move Towers we highlight how the work they and their companies do providing connectivity can support to narrow and hopefully soon close the digital gender gap.

Hear more about what the Women who move towers say about the initiatives that towercos across the world have implemented and what roles they have played to help support communities develop digital skills which should lead to greater digital equity.

According to TowerXchange’s recent Benchmarking Report which covers 13 towercos that collectively owned 600k towers worldwide at the time the report was published (end 2022), towercos are putting increasing effort to improve their diversity, recruit new talent and improve governance in the face of new challenges internal and external. Towercos are making progress to improve the presence of women in the workforce, but none have majority women in their total workforce, senior management or board. And many have just 20-30% women in senior positions. This presents an opportunity for improvement and TowerXchange will continue the conversation on how towercos are championing diversity and inclusion efforts within the infrastructure space at the meetups that we host globally.
