CelcomDigi renewed its strategic partnerships with EDOTCO, Edgepoint Infrastructure, D’Harmoni and PDC Telecommunication at TowerXchange Meetup Asia on November 26, renegotiating its key terms to future-proof its infrastructure. As part of Malaysia's push for digitisation the MNO has been working on a nationwide network integration and modernisation project.
The network integration and modernisation project has been underway since June 2023, and was enabled by the merger between Celcom and Digi which completed in November 2023. CelcomDigi said the project is 70% complete after over 10,500 sites were modernised by the end of October, covering over 65% of its customer base.
CelcomDigi aims to establish 18,000 5G-ready sites across Malaysia by 2026 which will be delivered through Malaysia's two wholesale open access operators, DNB and the newly announced network to be built by U Mobile. The company aims to complete 75% of network upgrades by end of 2024, ahead of its target.
Malaysia - estimated tower ownership
Malaysia's extensive community of towercos are essential to enabling the network modernisation. CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi said “Efforts to strengthen long-term partnerships with tower companies are key to developing a robust network infrastructure." CelcomDigi is also exploring new avenues with its towercos, such as street furniture and in-building solutions.
