Digi Communications, the Romanian telecommunications and IT group, has announced its Portuguese subsidiary Digi Portugal has launched as the country's fourth mobile operator in a statement sent to Portuguese media.
Digi's Portuguese debut on Monday started with offering lower prices than its competitors - a move that Digi is famous for across the other European markets where it operates.
Digi claims it has invested EUR400mn in the country, employing 500 people at present. It continues to roll out its mobile network working with Vantage Towers and Cellnex as well as using the towercos' existing infrastructure for its points of presence.
The timeline of Digi Portugal's launch is also tied to the 5G spectrum auction in November 2021 in which Digi, at the time called Dixarobil, took part and was awarded a license for a EUR67mn price tag. It required new license owners to start commercial offers by end November 2024.
In summer 2024 Digi completed the acquisition of the largest MVNO in Portugal from telecommunications group Lorca JVCO for EUR150 mn. Nowo holds spectrum licenses in 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz and 3600 MHz frequency bands which it won in 2021.
Deliberately or not, Digi's 4th November launch was on the third anniversary of 5G launching in Portugal.
