Multiple sources have described a tower deal in Rwanda as “imminent” with Citi believed to be advising market leaders MTN Rwandacell on a potential deal with American Tower.
With penetration at 59.5% in Rwanda, there’s plenty of room for growth, and the government has a very progressive attitude toward LTE - positive signs for prospective towerco investment, although local regulator RURA’s efforts to stimulate bi-lateral infrastructure sharing may be a disincentive.
Some reports suggest MTN is bundling the sale of around 1,000 towers in Rwanda with an estimated 400 towers in Zambia, but this rumour has not been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Millicom CEO Holger Albrecht committed to inject US$80m into their subsidiary Tigo Rwanda in a meeting with the country’s president.
